The Volunteer of the Month for RSVP of Cumberland County is Carol Sprecher.

Sprecher has volunteered with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for nearly 16 years through the Cumberland County court system, helping to monitor children who need someone to guide them through tough times.

She particularly appreciates the support teams that provide positive guidance to enable the children to build their self-esteem and ultimately become productive adults.

Her first case involved two little girls. One morning, while sitting on the floor playing with dolls, the 4-year-old looked up at Sprecher and asked if she could let her doll smoke crack. Sprecher asked her if she thought it was a good thing to do.

The young girl replied: “No, it’s dirty and smells awful when my mommy and her boyfriend smoke it.”

This was quite an introduction for Sprecher. She quickly became aware of the needs of children.

Sprecher volunteered with the American Red Cross for 10 years. She continues to volunteer with their STAR program, which includes taking books into a nursing home so residents can continue to read.

Her greatest reward is when her client children are adopted, which enables them to have some closure and get a fresh start with a caring family.

Sprecher has lived in Carlisle most of her life. Her husband of 40 years is very supportive of her compassionate efforts. She has three daughters, five grandchildren, and one great-grandson. She enjoys crafting, reading, taking walks, and time with her feline friends: Smokey and Snowflake.
